A game of midnight golf seems an unlikely prospect to many enthusiasts and few golfers have experienced this delight. But now you have a novel opportunity to participate in an event which features round the clock golf in mid-summer at high latitudes. The Akureyri Golf Club hosts this tournament which is known as The Arctic Open Golf Championship. It is an international event which attracts golfers from various parts of the world. Highest number of international players so far is 120 participants. We have had players from all four corners of the world which has given us a great pleasure and from the ever increasing number of enquiries, we assume the pleasure to be mutual.
It was in 1986 that we held the first Arctic Open Tournament. Players do not have to worry about darkness cramping their style because the sun barely dips below the horizon.
The northernmost golf course in the world The Royal Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews golfers Handbook confirms that "The most northerly 18 hole golf course is the Akureyri Golf club in Iceland, which is situated 65 49' north of the Equator".
The Akureyri Golf Club was founded in 1935. Over the years, the golf course has grown to become a challenging 18-hole championship course, measuring more than 6,600 yards in length. This unique course is in a natural setting and provides a lovely view of the surrounding countryside.
Currently the club has some 600 members, most of whom participates actively in local golf tournaments and affiliated social events. The club has up-to-date facilities for it's events. The Akureyri Golf Club offers memberships to golfers from outside Iceland.
The proper place for conferences, meetings and incentives Akureyri and the Eyjafjörður area has all the true character of a desirable venue for conferences or fun-inspiring incentives.
There are diverse leisure activities on offer for conference participants, involving long and short trips to various locations in North Iceland. The local travel agents are known for their innovative ideas in relation to excursions of adventure and special events for groups of all sizes. It is because of all this that large numbers of visitors have made use of the local facilities to mingle serious study with the excitement of incentive tours to areas of adventure and unparalleled natural beauty.
Many of Iceland's most remarkable beauty spots are located in the North where it is possible to enjoy unforgettable natural beauty in peace and quiet, having at the same time easy access to all the services that are so indispensable in a modern society. We mustn't forget either that Eyjafjörður offers the benefit of excellent communications, in the air as well as by land and sea. There are up to 12 flights a day between Reykjavík and Akureyri, a direct flight between Copenhagen airport in Denmark and Akureyri, as well as frequent communications with other one of the most reliable airports in Iceland as far as scheduled services are concerned, since one can count on the fingers of one hand the number of days in the year due to bad weather.
Those who have arranged a conference, meeting or anniversary celebration in Akureyri or the vicinity generally agree that a major benefit of the experience is the resulting improvement in morale and motivation in the workplace.
